Hi All,
I thought we were on safe ground watching a 'Will and Grace' series finale. The writing on this show was excellent for the first six seasons, giving us some of the funniest moments in TV history. Grace singing 'Midnight Train To Georgia' with Sandra Bernhard? Classic! Any of the banter between Karen and Jack? Awesome! And the 'soulmate' relationship of Will and Grace? Incredible. Oh, how I loved this show. Somewhere in the sixth season, though, it started to fade a little bit. I think when Grace chose to 'see where things go' with Leo rather than have a baby with Will, that effectively put the nail in the coffin for Will and Grace's relationship. For those who might not know, Will is gay; Grace is his best friend who used to be in love with him. But their relationship was so much more.
They were the Ultimate Best Friends, truly there for each other no matter what, and truly supportive of each other no matter what. So what did they do in the series finale? They had Will and Grace not speaking to each other or being friends for 22 years. What?? It was the most poorly written episode of a TV show I've seen since...the Seinfeld finale. But this was much worse than Seinfeld. At least Seinfeld had laughs in the episode. This ending was so wretched, I laughed only one time. It's supposed to be a comedy. This ending was more of a drama. Which would be fine, if said drama stayed true to the characters. The writers basically took everything we loved about the characters (Will and Grace as best friends, Jack as self-absorbed and overly gay, Karen as the filthy rich lush with the witty lines) and threw that in the toilet.
I resent this 'ending' so much, I prefer to think that I never watched it. I'll imagine my own ending, which would involve Will and Grace as lifelong best friends, still supporting each other as they always had. Sure, they might have their own relationships, but they'd never be drawn apart. That was really the point of the show: to focus on the relationship of a gay man and his best girlfriend. They did that, for years, then forgot all about the show's focus at the end. And the supporting players of Jack and Karen, well, they were always the funniest thing about the show. They got to be that way because with them we didn't have the drama that we had with Will and Grace, who always had past issues to deal with. Karen and Jack were just as platonic as could be, and both shallow in a funny way.
I'll miss the characters, but there's always reruns, which I watch every night anyway. I hope the actors all go on to something else, but breaking that familiar character is difficult for most. Look at the Curse of Seinfeld. I love Julia Louis Dreyfus, but Elaine will always be her best role. And I love Megan Mullally, but topping Karen will be a challenge. We'll see I guess.
Funniest Lines from 'Will and Grace'
1)[watching slides in her bedroom, depressed, after a harsh breakup]
Grace: This was my puppy, BoBo. He got run over by a truck. Lucky bastard.
2) Will: You know, the female reproductive system is so amazing. It's a miracle, really. So complex. So beautiful. Yow! What is that thing? God! It looks like the bad guy in a science fiction movie.
Grace: Oh, please. Like your stuff looks like a box full of kittens? It don't.
3) Karen: [on hiring Jack to play a straight man in a commercial] No one in the world would believe you're straight. You're as gay as a clutchpurse on Tony night. You fell outta the gay tree, hitting every gay branch on the way down. And ya landed on a gay guy... and ya did 'em. No, no, honey, your gayness can be seen from space.
4) Will: Me? I'm not gay.
Jack: Well, this well-worn copy of the Dreamgirls soundtrack begs to differ.
5) Karen: Well honey, look on the bright side.
Grace: What bright side?
Karen: Jeez Honey it's just an expression.
There are a ton more of these, and it's really hard to pick the best.
The writing WAS good, see? In the past. It's just a shame they didn't end on a high note.
Have a great weekend!

Too bad. I taped the finale and was going to watch it this weekend. I don't usually watch the show, but was interested in how they would end it. I did the same thing with Sienfeld. Sounds like I got rooked both times.
Well said!!!!!!

I wouldn't recommend this finale to anyone. Sorry to say, they just didn't do it justice. You can record over that tape.
Joy: Thanks! I'm still disappointed here.
