Bugs are no fun. Seriously.

Apologies for recent absences from the Blogosphere! I went to visit the family for Memorial Day, see....and we all ended up ill from either a virus or a flu bug or food poisoning.

Sheesh! Those were some hours in the can I'd like to have avoided.

And even in my downtime, I saw some truly stomach-churning things. haha

First things first: Don't bother with the film 'Bug' (out in theaters), unless you want to feel as if you should take 1,000 showers afterward. haha Bean liked this movie, but I thought it was absolutely wretched. It made me feel positively dirty.

We went to see it because:

1) It's supposed to be "horror." Maybe?
2) It has Ashley Judd in it; we love her. Who doesn't?
3) We hadn't been to the movies in forever.
4) It was Bean's choice. Damn you, Bean. haha

Ashley was fine, but did some serious over-acting, and looked HORRIBLE. I mean, UGLY. No makeup, lots of crud and blood and whatever all over her in most of the film. And she is a cute girl in real life! And the whole thing was set in a dingy (capital D!) motel room. Me, being a germaphobe (winks, Terre!), I seriously did feel like showering after. Literally everything in the room was covered in grime and dirt, and seemed old, and unclean.

The plot? Directed by William Friedkin ("The Exorcist"), based on a play of the same name, it's basically just about two people who start off as friends, become lovers (the most unbelievable plot EVER, as Ashley Judd would not so much as glance at this ugly guy they picked for the love interest! Would not glance!), and basically go insane because they begin to believe that they are infected with bugs. They don't really do drugs, either. Some pot, some cocaine. But I think we're meant to believe that the "bug" fear comes not from drugs, but just from the mind of this lunatic guy, who convinces Judd that she, too, is infected. Judd plays a sad, pathetic, no-guts, submissive type of woman, the type that lets her ex-husband beat her and listens to anything this lunatic stranger tells her.

It's odd, because I am used to Judd in the role of the strong female lead. I guess she wanted something different, and sure, there are all types of women in the world, but I hate to see weak women, imaginary or not. Because as women, and as human beings in general, we all deserve more than to be submissive victims.

I said, Friedkin needs to go back into retirement, if this is all he can come up with. It was meant to be a psychological horror film, I can tell, but it just did not succeed in its aim. People going insane can be a GREAT plot idea, if done right (check: Poe). But I wasn't freaked out by these people; I just wished they'd bathe and have someone walk in and put bullets in their skulls. They were annoying, ignorant, and a bit cliched.

In short, this was a complete waste of $7.00. And keep in mind, I love (LOVE!) Ashley Judd. It pains me to be critical of her film. But she can do much, much better.

Next: Notes on a Scandal. More ugly actors. More terrible acting by an actress I love. Sheesh.

Oh - you are so right about BUG! I was grossed out by the previews, and I LOVE Ashley Judd, too - but not enough to see this film. I hate any movies where the characters are dirty - or have bad teeth! I even had a little trouble with Braveheart - but, in those days for Mel Gibson, we would watch anything. Uh...not so much anymore!

Can't WAIT to read about "Notes"!

Hey Terre!

haha Yeah, I went just to go with Bean and with the hope it might be scary, or suspenseful. No such luck!
