Mad World

Hi All,

If you've seen the commercial for the video game 'Gears of War,' you may have noticed the eerie, haunting Gary Jules version of the song 'Mad World,' originally written by Roland Orzabal of Tears For Fears. This song was on a Tears For Fears album in 1982, and years later, Jules' version appeared on the 'Donnie Darko' soundtrack. This song makes me sad, haunted, spooked, and blown away all at the same time. And while Jules' version is the best, it's been covered many times. I was searching for his version online yesterday and decided, for the heck of it, to see if Tori has covered it. She HAS!!!!

I nearly passed out listening to her version, found here:

Her live version is one of the tracks listed under August 2nd. Click on any song and it brings up a list you can listen to: This song is track 36. Turn it up a bit as this was clearly a bootleg recorded live, but it's a good recording. This is a wonderful site; it brings up tons of songs from tons of artists that people had posted online. Bootlegs, rares, and regular album tracks abound.

Anyway, they banned radios here due to the noise, and said we can only listen to music if we are off the phones and have headphones. So I brought my headphones in and have been enjoying The Killers' latest CD, along with a little Madonna (I still can't stop playing 'Confessions'), along with some Tori from this site. Yesterday as I was listening to 'Siren,' I actually forgot I was at work, and did not see anything around me. My mind was gone so far into the song, I was jolted when I realized I was actually at work still. Does that make sense? Have you ever heard a song that takes you far away? I've heard hundreds. This is why I generally do not listen to Tori at work; because she takes me so far in, I don't ever want to leave. Hard to explain, but her music touches my very soul. This is why I am such a fan(atic). That, and she's just a great person. My heart smiles just thinking about her.

*Update: Damn! Gary Jules' version can be found at this site, too. Wow.*

Anyhow; I wanted to post the lyrics to this song, because they are so sad, and beautiful. I love sad and beautiful the most.

MAD WORLD
(written by Roland Orzabal)

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces

Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere
Going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression
No expression

Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow
No tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I´m dying
Are the best I´ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
´Cause I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It´s a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday
Happy birthday

Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen
Sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me
No one knew me

Now the teacher tells me what´s my lesson
Look right through me
Look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I´m dying
Are the best I´ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
´Cause I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It´s a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world

Brilliant!

In election news, Virginia voted to ban gay marriages (backwards, backwards...), and we're still waiting to see who our Senator is. It was a really close race. I did read that the Dems are the majority now in the House. Yay!

Have a great day.

Thursday!
Webb is poised to WIN!!!! Hooray!!!! It still has not been officially announced. But the Democrats did well, sending a message. Rumsfeld is out, no loss there.

You need The Killers' new CD; it is excellent!
