A Blank Mind is a Terrible Thing

Hi All,
You know what the problem with caffeine is? If you go without it, as I have for months now (except for the chocolate), and then all of a sudden you have it, you get two reactions from your body (I do, anyway): 1) Insane alertness, mind-racing, and jitteriness, and 2) once you deprive yourself again, you get dull headaches. I assume that's what's causing the headache this morning, and the blank mind along with it. No comments from wisenheimers! haha Kidding. It could be a number of things I guess. When I was home over the weekend, I had quite a bit of sweet tea, which generally means it's loaded with caffeine also. I couldn't sleep at all while I was there, which was odd for me. I'm normally out like a light any night. I can't believe I used to drink coffee every day and tea! I used to be able to drink it right before I went to bed and it never phased me. Body must be seriously out of whack, you say? I'd say so.
Anyway. It's nothing a little Ibuprofen won't cure. That drug rules!

Entertainment Weekly had a cover story this week about 'The 25 Most Controversial Movies Ever.' They said they purposely excluded critic faves like 'Blue Velvet' because it didn't cause a stir among the masses. They were going for films that caused a stir all across the U.S and abroad. The films included were:

25) Aladdin (What?? And here I thought this was just a really funny Robin Williams kids' picture. Arabs were offended at a song lyric, apparently.)

24) Caligula (I thought this was a porn film. So I haven't seen it.)

23) Kids (I remember this controversy when it came out: young kids doing terrible things on purpose, as I remember. I never saw the film, though. I thought it was a documentary. I didn't know it had actors in it!)

22) Do The Right Thing (Great film. Highly recommended.)

21) Bonnie and Clyde (Never saw. I tend to not watch films made before 1977. haha No, seriously, I need to catch up on some of the older classics.)

20) Cannibal Holocaust (This was one of the ones listed at imdb as 'Most Disturbing.' Cannibals and Holocausts; it can't be the next Oscar winner.)

19) Basic Instinct (I saw this twice, I think. I own it too. And you thought I didn't like porn. haha)

18) I Am Curious (Yellow) (Never heard of this one...)

17) Freaks (I think The X Files mentioned this film, possibly, in an episode about Circus Freaks. I don't like the term, as it implies something negative about people, and I always look for the positive in people. But this movie is supposed to be harsh.)

16) United 93 (I don't really care to see someone else's idea of what happened on that flight. Because we'll never really know.)

15) Triumph of the Will (I think this should have probably been number one. Because you'll never get more controversial than Nazi Germany.)

14) The Warriors (Don't know much about it...)

13) The Da Vinci Code (The book was excellent. Read the book.)

12) The Deer Hunter (I remember being bored and leaving before I saw much of this movie. I was a teen at the time, when my parents rented it. I'm not much on war movies anyway, unless it's 'Full Metal Jacket.')

11) The Message (Don't know much about it..)

10) Baby Doll (Again...Don't know.)

9) Last Tango in Paris (Sounds interesting, but like I said...I'm spoiled by the movies of the 80's. My God, the 80's ruled!)

8) Natural Born Killers (I saw part of this but don't really remember it much. The only thing I think when I think of this movie is that Tori Amos was not happy with Oliver Stone for wanting to use one of her songs in it. She's nonviolent.)

7) Birth of a Nation (I'd like to see this one, mainly becuase it's so famous and was one of the first films made. But apparently it's got quite a bit of racism and pro-KKK stuff in it.)

6) The Last Temptation of Christ (I love this film. Its message makes more sense to me than that of The Da Vinci Code. Basically, Jesus envisions what his life would have been like if he'd had a wife and children, and had lived a normal life. But in the end he realizes he had no option to do that. I can understand that he was human being and may have had thoughts like that. I just don't believe he acted on them.)

5) JFK (I don't see what's controversial about this movie. But then, I'm all about Conspiracy Theories, so I tend to think that everyone knows our government killed JFK.)

4) Deep Throat (This really was a porn! How it got on the list, I'm not sure. Was it released mainstream? I can't picture it.)

3) Farenheit 9/11 (Excellent...excellent. Michael Moore is waaaayyyy ahead of his time.)

2) A Clockwork Orange (Another film I can't watch. The rape scene in this film goes way too far, in my opinion. It's another scene I'd have to walk out on. But the film itself is actually very good, and with a very good message about violence.)

1) The Passion of the Christ (I guess Jesus still brings about controversy! I didn't see this as Anti-Semitic at all. It's a historical fact that the Jewish people had Jesus put to death. The film portrayed that. I thought it made the Romans look like the villians, if anything. Every telling of Jesus' death tells us that the Jewish people orchestrated it. I don't consider them villains. I consider them, like Judas, to be parts of the plan.)

They forgot about 'Brokeback Mountain,' I believe. Of course, I think it's ridiculous that 'Brokeback' even caused a stir. Being gay is much more mainstream and accepted now than it's ever been, and I don't think all that many people were offended by the movie. If they were, they need to join us in the 21st Century. But I'll admit, I like my cowboys straight, and in tight black jeans with a black cowboy hat on. Whoo! It's hot in here. haha

Controversial Things I've Done
1) Begged to be allowed to wear the Madonna 'Like A Virgin'-era clothing. Was told, "Hell no" by my mother. haha She didn't curse. But she did tell me that until I turned 18, I could not wear that trampy stuff.
2) Realized that my cat is black and handicapped, so I tried to get a permit. (She has a lame leg. You'd never know it though.)
3) Hugged an African-American guy once in the parking lot in high school and drew the shock of bystanders. You've gotta love the ass-backwards South.
4) Once drank three Espressos back-to-back. And then proclaimed myself, "Queen of the World."
5) Found this cute plant in the woods and decided to smoke it. I don't remember that day at all.

haha
I made those up. Except numbers 1 and 3. They were true. I don't do controversial things, because I'm Southern, and Christian, and Reserved. But I do plan on playing 'Like a Virgin' at my wedding and doing the whole Madonna-in-a-wedding-dress-rolling-around-on-the-floor routine. I think that will be hilarious. Bean will record it to film. My mom will pass out from shock. ;)

Have a great day, all!

You drank three expressos in a row? YOU ARE MY HERO! :)

Somehow I knew you'd say that! I thought about you when I made the reference. You coffee-drinkin' maniac! (JK). Actually, I made that one up. I've had 3 Cappucino's before though; is that admirable?

Hey, I'm a big "Last Temptation of Christ" fan! I wasn't sure what the fuss was all about... There was a disclaimer at the beginning telling you that it wasn't a rendition of the Gospels. I actually found it spiritually moving. If Jesus was God made flesh, then it makes sense he would entertain the idea of having a normal human life.
Great post, Marty! Now I have to run out and get that copy of EW. (EW... they really need a different acronym, don't they.) ;)

David:
'Temptation' is probably the best religious film out there.

I almost wrote 'EW,' but decided against it. :)

Southern people can't be controversial? Uh, Lynard Skynard? (sp?) et al? It okay, though. Too much controversy in the world anyway. Ha!

Deep Throat (also never seen it) was the first mainstream released porn. It actually hit theaters and couples went to it to see what it was all about. It later got it's 'bad person' lable and was shunned.

How far below the Manson Nixon line were you?

I always refer to myself as the conservative, Southern, Christian type. I'm kidding, mostly. I am Southern, being from Virginia. But you're right; there's plenty of controversy in the South.

I didn't know that about 'Deep Throat.' Learn something new every day.

I've seen Deep Throat. It sucks.

(I am bad. Oh so bad.)

Yes, you ARE bad!

VERY!

(But funny.)
