A New Earth

A New Earth. More like: A fairly New-Age, overly intellectual tome for your perusal. I picked up this book on Oprah’s recommendation. If I can agree with one thing Oprah did in her life, I agree with The Book Club. Anything that gets people to read is Good, in my mind.

Lately, I’ve been in need of some inner peace. There’s only one thing I can’t conquer, and that’s The Obsessive Thought. I don’t mean, you’re lying in bed and you think about all of the things you have to do. I mean, you’re at work, and you think that thought. You’re at home reading, and you think that thought. You’re playing with your nephew, and you think that thought. It’s a little bit hard to stay in the moment when you can’t get thoughts out of your head.

Therapy is a great thing, and it has taught me how to better deal with this. Meds take the edge off. But none of these stop the thoughts from getting in there in the first place. And maybe that will never happen. But I’m always looking for ideas on how to change my thought patterns for the better.

So I thought, I’ll read this book. I didn’t know I’d need a thesaurus! An audience member on Oprah’s show said that this book was hard to read, a bit pretentious. They weren’t kidding! It’s the language that makes it so. This book is best when the author gives examples from his life to illustrate his points. It’s also best when he brings in scripture from various religions, mostly from The Bible, but also from Taoism and Hinduism.

He has two key points: Go beyond The Ego (which we all have) and, Live in the Moment. Essentially, this is the same thing. If we’re able to go beyond our own wants and thoughts, and truly become servants of The Moment, we’ll find enlightenment. Or something like that. Haha

I appreciate the message here, but if you’re looking for a light read, this isn’t it. Will we ever have a New Earth? That remains to be seen. There are many who try to live in the moment, perhaps, but can we ever get rid of The Ego, since it’s all we know? From the time we’re born, it’s all about ME. I’m not sure we know how to change that. But, I suppose we can try.

So, here’s to a New Earth!

Tonight I am having a glass of wine and just living in the moment of not being at work, not having to worry about being "on", and excited to hit my pillow later. Easier said than done sometimes, but its the effort that counts, too, my dear. You are making strides, remember that.
