I loved the first "Resident Evil" movie (I own it), hated the second (Bean and I saw it in the theater, but have no recollection what it was about), and was curious about the third, since the previews looked very "pretty." Well, I wasn't disappointed.
Milla Jovovich: unlikely action star? She's come into her own, that's for sure. Milla, along with every other female action star, owes a debt to my favorite (still), Ripley. As Alice, Milla wields guns like they were second nature, looks like she enjoys kicking ass, and has a commanding presence (as well as some super-powers) over the enemy; one word from her and they cower.
Bean and I agreed; we're not big fans of the whole "Zombie" idea. I love creatures and monsters; they're always an allegory, you know, but I love those too. But Zombies? I never got into the whole "Evil Dead" series, or any Zombie-themed series. I'll have to discuss this with my male friends at work; they're all nerds (that's a compliment!) and love their video games, so surely they can explain this to me: If a zombie is a dead person, who has come back to life, how can it EVER be killed? Wouldn't it just come back to life again??
Plenty of zombies in "Resident Evil." This is the only zombie film I can tolerate. Part three, "Extinction," was a true cut above; directed with such beautiful cinematography and such stark images (the sky on fire, swarms of ravens, and Las Vegas buried in sand), it was reminiscent of movies like "The Cell" and even "300," as far as the look and feel of it. It wasn't quite as pretty as those films (nothing could be prettier than the gorgeous men of "300!"), but it kept our interest, even during the slower parts.
This movie had a few truly great moments: The Raven Attack, which was a nice homage to "The Birds," the sandy, horror-out-in-the-daylight theme throughout, and the ending, which tells us, there will be a sequel.
I've wanted to write a horror story like that; where horror is shown, out in the daylight. I think it might be even scarier.
In football news, Go Giants, Go Packers, and I don't really care about the rest.
Have a great weekend.
