Early Winter

I've been listening to Gwen Stefani's "Early Winter" lately. That's a GREAT song; I need to pick up the album. It made me think about winter, which I love as a metaphor, and just, in general.

Winter will always be certain things, for me.

1) Snow. Snow is AWESOME. I'm kind of obsessed with all forms of water, which is our life-giver and is, literally, most of what we are.

2) Blankets. As much as I love snow, I love curling up under a nice warm blanket in front of the fire (or heater) even more.

3) Cats. Leia loves to curl up on my stomach during the cold winter months. There's nothing like a soft, happy kitty sleeping on you and purring the whole time.

4) Tori Amos wrote a song called "Winter" which is still one of her best.

5) Soup. A nice bowl of hot vegetable soup....sweet.

6) Chilli. A nice bowl of hot chilli, with some warm cornbread...sweeter.

7) Coffee. A nice hot cup of coffee, while reading the paper...sweetest!

8) Cold wood floors. I've stepped on many of those. And while my feet don't enjoy it, it's a specific memory for me, and one I kind of like.

9) The woods. As teens, we used to take long walks in the woods, mostly in the winter, because you couldn't during the summer (don't want poison oak or ticks). It gave me a great love of nature.

10) Cold, cold. I like the cold, these days, because it means I can enjoy getting warm all the more!

I was really saddened to read the news that Heath Ledger is gone. We were just talking about '10 Things I Hate About You' the other day. I'm probably the only one who remembers Heath from that. I love that movie. It's always terrible when someone so young leaves us. And to know he had a child who won't know him. So sad, for all.

Peace wherever you are, Heath.

Marty, I love your list. As tough as winter can be, its those simple things that make it so very special. Oh lord now I am craving chili over cornbread. :)
