I had to take a typing assesment test today, which was interesting. I took typing in high school, but scraped by on it and never did learn to type the 'correct' way, with your hands in the right positions and all. But, I learned to type my own way, and can type pretty fast.
40 WPM, apparently. Is that good? Who knows. I learned so many skills here at this office job; it's really been good for me.
What did I learn?
1) Electronics. While I've had an interest in these things for awhile, it wasn't until I worked here that I learned all of the intricacies of the changing technologies.
2) How to connect home theaters and how the different TVs work. Good to know, because I love my home theater!
3) PC technical ins and outs. Still learning there, but I know so much more now than I ever would have otherwise. PCs are fascinating and brilliant inventions, if you understand how to troubleshoot.
4) How to deal with people who are challenging. I've always had the patience of Job, but I learned a lot about how NOT to be co-dependent in this job. My first call, I got cursed up one side and down the other. My trainer was right there, telling me how to respond. The insults weren't at me personally; they were about the situation. Since then, I've been told by customers that they'd get me fired (over a decision I was merely relaying from another dept.), that they'll contact the Attorney General, the BBB, their lawyer, blah, blah, blah. Oh, and they'll never shop with us again, and will support Best Buy till the day they die. Well, Yipee! Maybe I shouldn't admit, but we completely ignore such comments. And we actually laugh at the 'Attorney General' and 'BBB' stuff, because people threaten that all the time, over the DUMBEST things. Things I can solve within 5 minutes. People are hilarious.
5) As a side-note to No.4, dealing with such forceful people for so long has made me, myself, much more willing to express my opinion. Therapy probably helped there too. But I don't really hold much back anymore. I still believe in respect and kindness to all (I'm a Christian, after all), and won't be rude to anyone, if I can help it. We all have our bad moods (PMS, anyone??), but that I do try to keep to myself. But otherwise, I see no reason to hide things. Honesty and openness are the keys to a lot of stress relief.
6) My typing, listening, and writing skills have all been enhanced. Only thing is, I now hate phones as a result. haha But I will email you novels. haha
7) Multi-tasking. I'm much better at this than ever, because on an average day I have to complete four or five different tasks, all day long.
8) The joy of change, closure, and the satisfaction of helping people. I'm an Obsessive-Compulsive who feels I 'need' routine, and the fact I've done like 10 different roles, have learned at least 15 different programs, have had numerous supervisors, co-workers, and responsibilities all helps me in that the change (which I resist by nature) actually helps 'cure' the OCD tendencies. There is routine only in that it's the same company, and the same type of roles (mostly call center). But I do get closure, as I resolve each case, and move on to the next. And, even though I guess I sounded jaded above, I really do like helping customers. The frustrating ones are the ones who will not let you help, who get rude and abusive, and who demand things we cannot provide. But mostly, we get to answer questions, resolve issues, and we work very hard for our customers, for the company, for the department. And at the end of it all, I do feel a great sense of satisfaction.
And, it's relatively stress-free. And I make a decent salary. And, in down time they used to allow us to read, or write, or whatever. I can't argue with that!
I picked up '300;' review will be forthcoming.
On a completely unrelated note, I saw a DirecTV ad last night which uses a scene from 'Aliens' and alters it so that it appears that Sigourney Weaver is talking to the camera and shilling for DirecTV. As a die-hard 'Aliens' fan, I am angered!! Blasphemy! I don't know how DirecTV does this (computer tricks, I assume), but they do this lately where they take scenes from movies and make it appear as if the actor is shilling for DirecTV. I don't like it! I do not believe that the actors are truly involved, and I wonder how copyrights work on that. In any case, I'm offended that they'd alter any scene to sell a product. Sheeesh!
Rant over. haha
Have a great day.

You know, I think Sigourney Weaver IS promoting DirecTV. I know that Pamela Anderson signed a contract to do that commercial she did - AND - while they used some of the scenes directly from Aliens - the ones of her close-up look like they were shot with filters and light, to make her look younger. I have seen that movie so many times - and I can tell there is a difference. Oh well...I supposed Siggy's days of action hero have passed. All she makes now are these goofy independent "FILMS". Although I did read that she will be in a new sci-fi thriller entitled, Avatar. Have no idea what it is about.
How are you doing??...
Terre
Hey Terre,
Well, perhaps you're right. If that's the case, that is a sell-out! For all of the actors who did it. I noticed the difference too but figured it was the computer.
'Avatar' might be good; we'll see...can't be any worse than those independent films. ;)
I'm good! Thanks!
