Notes on a Scandal

The scandal is that:

1) Cate Blanchett would ever take such a role
2) Judi Dench would ever allow herself to look so God-awful
3) We sat through this dreck

haha

We rented this one because, a) We'd heard it was good (from reviewers) b) We love Cate Blanchett c) We were curious

I'm sorry to say, Blanchett wasn't likable, overacted a bit, but on the plus side looked radiant as usual and almost angelic at times. Well, she had to, compared to Dame Judi Dench, who looked worse than I have ever in my life seen an actress look. I am serious! Now, I don't mean to be harsh. I like Judi Dench as an actress; she generally gives great, fierce performances. But here, she just seemed very old (looked even older than she actually is, at 72) and very creepy.

The basic plot: Young schoolteacher (Blanchett) has an affair with a 15 year old student (eeeewwww!), and a fellow teacher (Dench), who also happens to be a predatory lesbian, finds out and keeps this secret, until she realizes that Blanchett has no interest in her. Once the fit hits the shan, they both end up fired, and both in dire straits.

There were many things in this film which bothered us, and made us want to wince or look away:

1) Blanchett, a woman in her late 30's, having sex with a 15 year old
2) Dench, a woman of 72, making eyes at Blanchett, someone who could be her daughter
3) Dench acting like a crazy stalker
4) The lack of makeup for Dench
5) The thought of Dench making a move on Cate

We prayed the whole time that there wouldn't be any woman-on-woman sex shown; that might have made us want to scratch our eyes out. Seeing Cate with that boy was bad enough.

One thing that really amused us, though, was the use of Brit terms we didn't know. I wished I'd taken notes as to what they all were, as I cannot remember them now. But we had captioning on, and even in the context of the sentence, we couldn't quite make some of them out. I was proud of myself for knowing "moggies" (cats)! Thanks, Peej!

Anyhoo, I'm not sure who this film appeals to. People who like feeling uncomfortable, no doubt. haha

I'm not sure what's next on our list. Hopefully, something much better.

Good Eve to All!

I loved your review!!!! Priceless - and, of course, I agree with every word! Have you seen Deja Vu with Denzel Washington? Just watched it on pay-per-view and nearly had a coronary! Too intense!

Good night!
:-)

Hey Terre!

I have not seen Deja Vu. Heard mixed things...not sure I want to see. Normally, it would be my type of movie, but Bean watched part of it and said it made no sense and she couldn't get into it. Is it worth me trying to watch?

If you have ever read "Wrinkle in Time" you will get it. Of course - you have to suspend reality a bit. My son said that I wouldn't get it - but I got it just fine! Can't wait to tell him. hahaha!

My favorite Judi Dench role is when she was the author Eleanor Lavish in the film version of A Room With A View! :) I will pass on this film after your review, but at least the review was entertaining! I give it a 10/10 for the number of giggles I got! :)

"Angels and ministers of grace defend us!"

Tis the ghost of Thursday Next, who, alas, we have sorely missed.

I'm glad the review amused-I was kind, compared to Bean's review!

Have you seen Helen Mirren lately? While we are on the subject of Brit ladies, I have to say that she is looking hotter than Ms. Blanchett, who could be her daughter. There were some great photos of Mirren and Beckham from some awards thingy a few weeks ago, and damn I wish they would run off together for a torrid affair. I hate Posh. Ok, enough rambling on British women...of course my all time favorite Brit actress is Vivian Leigh. :) Oh hell, I need to do a post on British women...or you do...or we both do? xoxoxo

Helen Mirren is awesome! And indeed, is looking most excellent these days.

Beckham! *Sigh* He can play MY field. haha

Post on Brit women, huh? I'm sure I can do that. ;)
