Hi All,
We watched 'North Country' the other night. It was pretty good. It was exactly as the previews showed: Grungy-looking women suing the miners who sexually harassed them. The way things were portrayed in this movie, these male miners wrote some very offensive things (the C word is the worst thing you can call a woman, in my opinion) on walls, in the bathroom (not in ink), and well, anyplace where the women would see it and be offended. I'm not sure why these male miners said and wrote such things; these women did nothing to provoke it. Oh, but Charlize Theron, the most beautiful miner ever, came to work there, and she's considered the Town Slut, so they think it's ok to call her whatever, because she probably is.
Now, I don't condone slutty behavior. I don't think of sex the way any other person alive thinks of it, apparently. To me it's something sacred. But regardless, I think it's dead wrong to judge someone based on how many people they slept with. Or didn't. Or what type of person they slept with. Why do I CARE who sleeps with who? I don't! Sleep with gorillas for all I care. Or Yetis. I hear Yetis are pretty soft and comfortable. ha It's none of my business. And it's no one else's business, either.
So I got my Feminist Rant all ready in my head, as I watched this movie. Partly, it was because these men (who weren't anything to fawn over themselves!) were so incredibly rude to Charlize, it made me wish she'd take a 2x4 to their ignorant faces. But mainly, Charlize is Charlize, and she's insanely likable, even when covered in soot and playing the Town Whore. She wasn't really a whore. She had 2 kids out of wedlock, by 2 different men. That doesn't make her a whore. That makes her a girl who can't settle down.
So we all know she wins the lawsuit, as it was a historical landmark case. Well, she should! I guess these men felt threatened, with women doing the same job. Get over it, Mr. Testosterone! If you want to do MY job, go ahead. I'd rather be traveling and writing anyway. ;)
I'm not one that understands harrassment of any kind, really. I was taught I had to respect every person I came into contact with, regardless. I marvel that some people weren't taught this. I 'believe' it's the major tenet of every religion on the planet.
But one more thing about that movie: What I REALLY don't get, is:
The women were almost as firmly against Charlize as the men were. Actually, I do get it. Women are much stronger enemies to each other than men are. Women have this ability to be catty (reowr!), jealous, small-minded, and just plain vindictive. Men, they smile and go, "Ah, it's all good." This is why I love men. So laid back and worry-free. Whereas we're over here like, "Oh God! The world is ending!"
I'm not talking about ALL women, of course. I'm just talking about the snakey ones we all know too well. Instead of bonding together, we create battles against each other that don't have to be there. Can you tell I recently had an encounter with a back-stabbing woman? If I had a nickel for every one of those...
And guess how many men have stabbed me in the back in my life? Zero.
Anyway. As a woman and as a Feminist, I was appalled at the men and the women in this movie. The only one with a lick of sense was Charlize. And, I just love writing her name: Charlize. Charlize. haha
Grade: B
It's a good rental, I'd say. But if you're like me and Bean, be prepared to exchange glances of "What? Why?" a bit. Maybe that's just me. I don't understand attacking other people. It truly makes no sense to me. But then, I am pretty naive. ;)
Things I'd Have Done if I was Charlize in 'North Country'
1) Proclaimed, "This is the dirtiest place ever. I'm about to have a panic attack."
2) I'd have dropped trou and mooned them all when I left
3) I'd have told the guy who tried to attack me to "Eat rocks."
4) I'd have told the women, "Have a nice life in the dungeons of Hell, bitches."
5) I'd have sung "9 to 5" as I left.
haha (I wouldn't actually do those things.)
Have a great day...and remember, Revlon works wonders for female miners.

#4 & #5 are fabulous--esp. the 9-5 song. hahahahaha. I sorta felt the same way about the movie as you did...some of the sensationalized bits actually annoyed me, but overall, I found the story really very good...
Hey Marty...
I'm like you about this movie. Actually, I saw it in the theater - and was very disappointed. It was predictable fare - but the part about the women turning on her left me clueless, just as it did you! The only thing I could think about it was that Charlize thought she had such great luck playing ugly-dirty-slutty-whatever serial killer in Monster - so she gave the grimey look another shot to see if she raked in another Oscar. Oh well...can't win them all!!! Silkwood and Norma Rae were so much better! Oh...Silkwood had Meryl Streep in it! No wonder!!!
Take Care!
Terre
Ryane:
Thanks! I'm really just glad I never had to attempt to work such a job.
Hey Terre!
'Silkwood' and 'Norma Rae' were a LOT better, indeed. I knew once I saw previews of this movie that Charlize wanted Oscar #2. Grimy appearances do not an Oscar make!
This post has me totally thinking way off on another movie: Zoolander. I crack up when he goes back to his roots and the mines; Vince Vaughn is one of the brothers! :)
Ugh, sadly women are quite catty. Any woman who backstabs another woman might as well be killing her own sister...
Women are indeed the worst enemies of other women. I have said for years that a woman will not be elected president, and that it will be the women of our country that keep it from happening.
Case in point: My sister works with a 'woman' (I use the term loosely) who announced that she would never vote for a woman president because women are far too emotional.
I have to tell you, that comment made me all sorts of emotional. REALLY.EMOTIONAL.
Thursday: 'Zoolander' was funny! I'm glad some of us understand the sisterhood. Sheesh!
WIP: Where's a 2x4 when you need it? haha For that woman your sister works with. My mom and dad agree: There will never be a female president; the women are too much against it. How freaking sad is THAT?? We got a female minister, finally, at my home church. And guess who was against it? These longstanding 'Christian' church leaders, who are women. I don't get it. At all.
Thanks for the review Marty! (Have you seen V for Vendetta yet?)
I'll prolly seen North Country at some point, but I haven't seen Monster yet...will want to see that first.
Yeah, I think all people are incredibly adaptable and our potential is limitless. Preset gender roles are extremely shortsighted.
"Monster" will make you literally WORRY for Charlize, she looks so horrible and changed her body so much for the role. Seriously, my brother was concerned. ;)
V just came from Netflix...review will be forthcoming, I'm sure.
