Hi All,
This is really an open letter to the fanboys:
I'm really tired of the fanboys whining about the fact that the new Star Wars DVDs will not be 'anamorphic' widescreen and Dolby 5.1.
Have you people forgotten that we went 20 years with only VHS??????? You go too far in wanting perfection (obsessive perfection, which is a clinical disorder, fanboys, look it up.) and forget that the whole point is, we wanted the originals on DVD, preserved forever. And that's what we're getting. My ears work just fine for Dolby 2.0; they always did. And my eyes might notice the matte glitches and such since the films won't be restored the way they are with the Special Editions, but so what? As a child I loved every single frame of these movies, regardless.
Are you people saying you PREFER the tooled-with editions? I liked the restoration and some of the added scenes for the SE, who didn't?
But what gave me a lifelong love of film in the first place (as well as a lifelong obsession with Star Wars) was that film, Star Wars, complete with vaseline-fudged landspeeder scenes. Complete with matte glitches and regular old Dolby 2.0. Life is not perfect. Neither are these films. That's why we should love them. Even with small imperfections, they're the best films ever.
I'll be buying the Original Trilogy on DVD come September. I love the Digital Age and I love the best quality in films. I'm glad there are filmmakers out there like George Lucas and James Cameron who care about the best sound, picture, and advancements in technology for films. But enough is enough! I grew up with blurry antenna instead of cable. I grew up with laserdisc, then VHS, then DVD. I grew up with Dolby 2.0 stereo sound. My life was not wrecked because I did not have THE BEST PICTURE AND SOUND EVER! All of this push toward digital upon improved digital and HD is one of the biggest marketing scams in history. I know because I work for a company that promotes all of this stuff. We have become spoiled sick when we gripe over a DVD. Honestly!
*End of Rant*

I pretty much agree. I have the last boxed set of the VHS trilogy that came out in 1997 right before the special editions hit the theater. I think the THX is the only "new" thing about those. Personally, I don't really notice. A tiny incremental difference in the sound quality isn't enough to make up for all the other weird stuff that jars me out of the story by making me go, "THIS IS NOT THE STAR WARS I WATCHED WHEN I WAS A KID! @#(*&$%"
haha
Amen to that. I liked some of the SE stuff, like the expanded Mos Eisely and Cloud City, but I get upset and want to FF every time I see Jabba in ANH. And, call me a purist, but I just want what I saw as a kid! That's what I loved!
