Confessions of a Lit Fiend: I'm not really a huge fan of stories set in Victorian times, because, let's face it: people going to balls, dressing in corsets, and speaking as if they have a huge stick up their ass is kind of dull. hahaha Damn you, George Lucas, and your flashy visuals and fast-paced stories! I am spoiled by such movies, and, as this is the case, when I try to watch Jane Austen adaptations, I find the pacing far too slow, and the ideas far too removed from our modern times. Forgetting about a fast pace, even; we would have been happy with a kiss between Darcy and Elizabeth!! I mean, come on!
Ah, but this was a good adaptation. I'm just used to more modern stories, with our more modern sensibilities. But still, Austen captured the aura of her time perfectly, and she wove one heck of a love story. I find Darcy hard to like, at first, just as Elizabeth does; I think this is by design. But as the film goes along, we see that he keeps Elizabeth's interests at heart, and by the end, when they meet in a field to declare their love for one another, I was ready to rip his shirt off. haha I wish someone (Hello, Amy Heckerling! 'Clueless' was great!) would re-do all of Austen's stories with a modern flair. I think, like Shakespeare's stories, they'd work in any time. Plus, no more corsets. ha
In other news, Madonna's new album, 'Hard Candy,' is released today. I'm not sure I'm into a Timbaland-vibe. But Ms. M has rarely made an error, in music, at least.
We shall see!
Namaste!
