Knocked Up

We're a bit late, but we finally saw 'Knocked Up' over the weekend. This movie was described as a 'sleeper hit,' a term which I never really understood. I think it means, a 'surprise' hit, but what 'sleeper' means, I've really never known.

Starring Seth Rogan and Katherine (Izzie!) Heigl, the premise here is: Two people, one a hot blonde, one a stoner Average Guy, get drunk, have sex, and wham! She ends up pregnant. So, two opposites try to make the best of the situation. They try to be friends, they try to date, they try to have sex, and in all of it, numerous references to smoking pot, potty humor, slacker humor, and 'awkward romances' humor abound.

BUT..lest this sound like the average comedy we've seen ten thousand times (I'm thinking about you, Adam Sandler and pals), there was a saving grace to this film. Leslie Mann as Allison's (Heigl) sister Debbie, was hilarious. We got more belly laughs from her than we did from Seth Rogan, who's a comedian. Also, SNL's Kristen Wiig, and Paul Rudd as Pete, Debbie's husband, were great supporting players. Heigl was good, as usual; that girl could act her way out of a paper bag. Considering how much she's made me cry in the last 2 years (damn you, Izzie Stephens!), it was nice to see her in a role that really wasn't too dramatic.

Seth Rogan's character annoyed us slightly, (I think he was supposed to?) because he was the most irresponsible, immature boy on the planet. I say 'boy,' because that's about the level of maturity the writers gave him; he doesn't work for a living, he smokes pot all day, and he takes very little responsibility when he learns he's about to become a father. Oh, but of course he wisens up by the end (insert "Awwww!" here). We were annoyed because, sadly, we know far too many men/boys like this, and we wish we knew more men who are responsible, have lots of ambition, and who can do more than smoke pot, dress like a ragamuffin, and treat women like casual sex partners. I'm all for being a Big Kid; don't get me wrong. I'd be the girlfriend who thinks your toy collection is cool, I don't care how many video games you play, and you can want to never grow up if you like. But when it comes to serious things like children and income, you have to have some drive there. It's just common sense.

But overall, this was an enjoyable movie. It was a tad long, at 2 hours, and some of the plot could have been condensed a bit, I thought. But it made me laugh, and that's a good thing.

Grade: B

Have a great day.
