It's no secret I'm a huge Brad Pitt fan, and a Cate Blanchett fan also. But, you shouldn't view this movie as their movie. It's billed as such, because they're the only big names in it, but really, this was an ensemble effort. In truth, Cate didn't have much to do except lay around injured. Brad gave a great performance, for the time he was on the screen. And even though they tried to make him look much older than he is, he still looked like the Brad I'd love as a husband. haha Okay, enough with the Brad-worship. A woman can dream, right?
'Babel' was so named because of its diverse cast-all speaking different languages. It was reminiscent of 'Crash' in that the plot developed by switching from story to story, all of them connected in the end. There's the sad tale of two Moroccan boys who become adults too quickly by accident, the tale of a young Japanese woman who tries to become an adult too quickly on purpose, the tale of a Mexican woman who makes an error in judgment, and the American tourists who encounter a crisis abroad.
I liked this film, though it was long. Bean said every film we rented lately was waaayy too long. All were 2 1/2 hours at least. With our ADD-inspired attention spans, I guess they do seem long. But I enjoyed them; after all, I didn't have anywhere else I could go. And when I like to get away, there's no better place than at the movies (preferably in my living room).
Grade: B+
Nice interlocking plot, good actors.
There are some out I'd like to see now, though: '300' looks incredible, and I will buy it on the look of it alone. Beautiful cinematography! I'm a very visual person, so that suits me. 'Zodiac' is from David Fincher, one of my favorite directors. Interesting that I have interest in films now based on director or plot, not on actors.
If readers see anything good, let me know!
Have a great day.
