Pop Culture?

Hi All,
They're having the 'World Series' of pop culture on VH-1 (in conjunction with Entertainment Weekly). Bean and I could cry to know that we were somehow not included in this. Next year, we must apply and get picked, come hell or high water! They asked questions like, "What song does Willie sing at the opening of 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?' And people missed it! I was yelling, "Anything Goes!!! Anything Goes, you fools!" And they asked, "What 'Sex and the City' character had a baby named Brady?" How anyone could miss that (and they did!) is beyond me! Well, if you never watched the show, I guess I might understand. But there was only one character that even HAD a baby, and you'd know that from previews, if you see them, which TBS shows all the time. I had to turn away finally to watch 'Family Guy.' The stress of people getting them wrong was beyond me. haha Not that I'd get everything right myself. 'Godfather' questions? I'd miss them all, as I never saw those movies. But Indiana Jones...Lordy. She does sing the song in Chinese, but at the end she says the title. I remember it well because it was impressive in the theater. It was such a splashy opening and then the film went to pure action from there. And, anything with Harrison Ford tends to stick in the mind. ;)

In other news that I meant to mention prior, Gillian Anderson and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, two of my favorite actresses, were nominated for Emmys. Here's hoping they win! Those two should have awards falling off the mantle. Otherwise, I don't generally get too excited about the Emmys. But it was great to see Gillian on the map again (nominated for 'Bleak House').

I was attempting to make a list of my favorite albums, but I decided it can't be done. Because it would probably go to 100, and would be too hard to continually comment on. There's too much great music out there. I can probably name some of the 'perfect albums,' but not all.

Like:
1) Little Earthquakes (Tori Amos)
2) Scarlet's Walk (Tori Amos)
3) Nevermind (Nirvana)
4) Achtung Baby (U2)
5) Like a Prayer (Madonna)
6) Ray of Light (Madonna)
7) Purple Rain (Prince)
8) Reckoning (REM)
9) Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
10) Ten (Pearl Jam)
11) Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (Sarah MacLachlan)
12) Surfacing (Sarah MacLachlan)
13) Sheryl Crow (Sheryl Crow)
14) Jagged Little Pill (Alanis)
15) OK Computer (Radiohead)
16) What's the Story, Morning Glory? (Oasis)
17) Tongues and Tails (Sophie B. Hawkins)
18) Everybody's Doing It, So Why Can't We? (The Cranberries)
19) Tattoo You (The Rolling Stones)
20) Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles)

Of course, there's not really an order to this except numbers one and two.
And, I pretty much love every album these people put out.
I guess this is my 'if I were on a desert island' answer. I'd take these. And a CD player and lots of batteries. ha ha

But really, I'd need an ipod for the thousands of songs that I love from the 80's. Too many groups and one-hit-wonders to mention.

What books would I take?
I've probably covered that already.
The complete works of Shakespeare, Poe, Bronte, Dickinson, Hawthorne, Whitman, Fitzgerald, and 'Fight Club.' ha 'Fight Club' was just a great concept to me.

We're doing our own presentations in class now; doing powerpoints and all.
I feel like a teacher again.
Except my class is half asleep. ;)

More things I'd take to that island
1) Condoms and a six pack (Hey...you never know! haha)
2) As much red wine as I could
3) As much paper and pens as I could, since power would not work for long on the laptop
4) My cat, as she's my child
5) Pictures of Superman

haha
I am not being serious with that list.
Not entirely.
I'd definitely take a guy along so I could make good use of numbers 1 and 2. (smiles)

Have a great day, all.

Those are some nice choices. I absolutely adore Sophie B. Hawkins. Great voice, great songs. I would love to see her in concert. Maybe someday!

If I was on a deserted island I'd want cases of Ensure. Chocolate flavor.

Oh, and a Bible, the complete works of Shakespeare, the annotated works of Emily Dickinson, Monteverdi's Vespers, Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," and a boxed set of Louis Armstrong. That'd keep me goin'. ;)

Margarita Mix, Jimmy Buffett cd's, Patrick O'Brien novels, and Ensure in pineapple flavor. :)

You all are killing me with the Ensure. Is it any good? Should I start drinking it? Does it mix well with Margarita Mix?

I 'almost' put Margs on there. Seriously I did! But favored the red wine.

I should do a more serious list of what I'd take. Would have to ponder for a long time. ;)
