Hi All,
I have to be a real nerd (this is a term I use affectionately) here for a minute and express the insane joy of Star Wars fans everywhere when I say: Thank The Maker, Lucas finally will release the original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD!!! What this means, for those not in the know, is that the original theatrical versions of these films will be available on DVD for the first time ever. Thus far we had only the 'Special Editions' which had added scenes and updates, some of which we loved (expanded scenery, added footage of the coolest creature ever, the Wampa) and some of which we hated (Han shoots first! We all know he does! And Jabba does not belong in A New Hope). I guess it might be hard to understand why people would go nuts over the release of a DVD. It's just a movie, some might say.
But it ISN'T 'just a movie!' It's the defining movie of our (my generation) childhoods. It's the film (the original, 'Star Wars,' released in 1977) that changed the way movies were made and marketed. It was one of the first true blockbusters ('Jaws' was the first). Lucas' company ILM pretty much invented special effects. The story itself was a modern myth that took us into a new world that actually was based on ancient ones. And, it starred my first true crush, Harrison Ford. Who is still one of the best actors ever to set foot in Hollywood. I won't even mention how the toys (which were also the first of their kind) gave us thousands of hours of wonderful play. Or how I as an adult, still consider it to be one of the greatest highs in life to watch those films. I think for me it all has to do with escapism. I will never forget that dark, quiet theater, and that HUGE screen, and the sight of it all bringing pure wonder to my four year old mind.
When I watch the scene at the end of A New Hope where they're flying through the Death Star trenches, today, I'm right there, four years old and in complete awe.
So all of this to say....Star Wars RULES! And will be out on DVD on September 12th.
And I know Dee will say, "I've never even seen these films."
Pack will say, "What the H are you babbling about?"
It's okay if you're not a fan, or haven't seen the films. Bean hasn't seen them, and truly has no desire. But she didn't grow up under the spell of it all so that makes sense. To each his own, I suppose. But let me tell you: You'll never find a better set of films, ever. I think of them all as one film, really, because it's impossible to pick a favorite. They are all extraordinary.
When A Movie Blows Us Away
1) We come out with glazed eyes and vacant stare
2) We come out with popcorn down our shirts
3) People try to talk to us and all we can muster is, "Huh?"
4) Even the 'theater knee' doesn't bother us. (This is a pain I get in the knee after sitting in a cool place for 2 1/2 hours. Old wreck injury. I can barely walk after. Serious)
5) We get so excited about it coming out on DVD, we ramble for a whole page.
;)
Have a great day!
